PHOTOGRAPHER, Poland, 1998, 35mm, color/b&w, 76 min, Polish with English subtitles, Directed by Dariusz Jablonski. In 1987, 400 color slides taken by Walter Genewein, the Naziss chief accountant for the Lodz Ghetto, were discovered in a second hand bookstore in Vienna. The photos of its inhabitants cast an innocuous light on the Ghetto but director Dariusz Jablonskis film, which was six years in the making, paints a different picture. Heartbreaking eyewitness testimony from Ghetto doctor Arnold Mostowicz, interspersed with telling Nazi records and correspondence, create one of the most realistic and disturbing portraits of Ghetto life ever put on screen. You will never forget it. Adolf Grimme Documentary Award 2000, Germany; Joris Ivens Documentary
