NOBODY’S BUSINESS, USA, 1996, 16mm, color, 60 min., English. Berliner follows up his highly regarded INTIMATE STANGER with another funny, poignant, densely textured look at family and personality: a chronicle of the Life of Oscar Berliner, Alan’s father. The film resembles a verbal slapstick duet that finds humor and pathos in the swirl of conflicts and affections that bind father and son. Oscar is a reluctant subject, very much alive and hilariously cranky. This complex portrait becomes a meeting of the minds – where past meets present, generations collide and the boundaries of family life are pushed, pulled, stretched, torn and, surprisingly, also healed. 1988 EMMY Award; Film Critics Caligari Prize; Ecumenical Jury Prize, Berlin Film Festival.
