AVANTI POPOLO, Israel, 1986, 35mm, color, 82 Min, Hebrew & Arabic, with English subtitles, Directed by Rafi Bukaee.

Two Egyptian soldiers, an actor and a peasant in civilian life, are stuck on the wrong side of the Suez Canal following the Egyptian army’s defeat in the Six Day War. The two decide to make a private retreat back across the canal. On the way they have a string of surrealistic encounters – a dead U.N. soldier, an English t.v. crew, a group of confused Israeli soldiers, and lots of booze. A highly visual film that won the Gold Leopard Award at the 1986 Locarno Film Festival.

Israeli Film Critics Award for Best Film.
Nominated for Best Foreign Film, 1987 Academy Awards.
